Plastic Found in the Mariana Trench Is a Disturbing Warning About Ocean Pollution

When people imagine the Mariana Trench, they often picture one of the last truly untouched places on Earth.

Located in the western Pacific Ocean, the trench contains Challenger Deep, the deepest known part of the world’s oceans, reaching almost 11 kilometers below sea level.

At such extreme depths—far from cities, factories, highways, and coastlines—it might seem reasonable to assume that human pollution couldn’t possibly reach it.

A review of decades of deep-sea observations documented a plastic bag at approximately 10,898 meters in the Mariana Trench, demonstrating just how far everyday waste can travel.

A Plastic Bag Nearly 11 Kilometers Below the Surface

One of the most striking findings came from an analysis of the Deep-sea Debris Database maintained using observations from thousands of deep-sea dives.

Researchers examined records from 5,010 dives and identified thousands of pieces of human-made debris.

More than one-third of the debris recorded was large plastic waste. In areas deeper than 6,000 meters, plastics represented an even greater share of the debris, and most of those plastic items were associated with single-use products.

The deepest recorded item was a plastic bag observed at 10,898 meters in the Mariana Trench.
