A stubborn cough, irritated throat, and thick mucus can make even a mild cold feel exhausting. One of the simplest home remedies is also one of the oldest: honey and lemon.
But despite claims online, honey and lemon do not literally “cleanse” the lungs or instantly remove mucus. What they can do is soothe an irritated throat, ease coughing, and provide fluids that may help make secretions easier to manage.
Here’s how to use this simple remedy safely.

You’ll need:
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1–2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 cup warm water (optional but recommended)
Stir the honey and lemon into warm—not boiling—water and sip slowly.
You can drink it when your throat feels irritated or when coughing is particularly bothersome.
Why Honey May Help
Honey coats the throat and can provide temporary relief from irritation. Research has also found that honey may help reduce coughing associated with uncomplicated upper respiratory infections.
That doesn’t mean honey treats the underlying infection or removes mucus from the lungs. Its main benefit is symptom relief.
Important: Never Give Honey to a Baby Under 12 Months
Honey can contain spores of Clostridium botulinum, which can cause infant botulism. It should therefore never be given to children younger than one year, even in small quantities.
Why Add Lemon?
Lemon provides flavor, fluid, and vitamin C. Adding lemon to warm water can make staying hydrated more pleasant when you’re sick.
However, lemon itself isn’t a proven “mucus dissolver” or lung cleanser.

Seek medical attention promptly for difficulty breathing, significant shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, bluish lips or face, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
You should also speak with a healthcare professional if a cough persists for several weeks, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by persistent fever or other concerning symptoms.
And remember: yellow or green mucus alone doesn’t necessarily mean you need antibiotics. Mucus color can change during ordinary viral infections too.
