- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
- In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until smooth.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, and blend well.
- Gradually incorporate the dry flour mixture into the wet ingredients, stirring until combined.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thick.
- Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut the dough into heart shapes.
- Place the heart-shaped cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Let the cookies cool completely before decorating with icing and sprinkles, if desired.

For a softer texture, chill the dough in the fridge for 30 minutes before rolling it out.
